PREMALATHA GOVINDASAMY

Her Story

Prema was exposed to yoga from a very young age. But it was only in 2004 that she took it seriously. She did her certification with the Malaysia Yoga Academy (MAYI) and immediately started teaching soon after.  With her toes dipped into yoga as a teacher, she decided to explore more about the ancient art than just its elementary forms. After researching deeper she found the philosophy and objectives of Iyengar Yoga seemed to appeal to her. She enrolled at BKS Yogashala (KL) and graduated as an Iyengar Teacher in 2017. She’s now extending her studies in Yoga Sutras, Yoga Therapy and Yoga Philosophy under Sri Nandakumar, a senior Iyengar teacher, to further deepen her knowledge and understanding.

In order to stay current and learn continuously, she makes it a point each year to attend various Workshops/Conventions/Retreats organised in Malaysia and overseas conducted by senior Iyengar teachers from Pune, India. At these sessions she studied directly under disciples of Guruji, namely Jawahar Bangeraji, Ramanand Patel, Abhijata Iyengar, Birjoo Mehta, Gulnaaz and Raya Dutta.  In 2017, she attended classes at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institution, in Pune, India.

Currently, she teaches at BKS Iyengar Yogashala in Kuala Lumpur. In addition, she does private and group classes ranging from 6 to 15 students per class. She also conducts Karma Yoga classes for a Refugee school and Non-Government Organisations.

She prefers to teach smaller groups so that she can give greater individual attention.
